Match Report 28th May 2016

Withersfield started its season with a fine win on Sunday 28th May against Helions Bumpstead Cricket Club at the Withersfield cricket ground. The sun was shining and there was a pleasant breeze when Withersfield took to the field after winning the toss and electing to bat. Withersfield started strongly with an opening partnership of 65 between C. Shannon and S. Street. C. Shannon scored 42 and S. Street went on to score 40. W. Bailey was the top scorer for Withersfield with a magnificent 72. D. Pass and C. Bradford put further pressure on Helios with 27 and 33 respectively before we saw a cameo performance by S. Prasana with two 4's and a 6 in his 18. Helions best bowling figures came from J. Winter with 3 wickets for 40 runs off 7 overs. Withersfield had set a very difficult target of 269 to win off their 40 overs.

A magnificent Tea was provided to both sides and some of the lucky spectators by Sian, Penny and Stella with traditional bunting decorating the pavilion.

When Helions took to the field the clouds had started to gather and they had to work hard to score off some fine Withersfield bowling. Withersfield had an early success when Helions opening batsman N. Hanks was caught and bowled by T. Bell for a duck. They did however persevere and we saw some fine batting from M. Claydon and L. Goldstone scoring 20 and 31 respectively. Helions found it difficult to keep up with the required run rate and after a fighting 24 from E. Murray with 2 sixes and a 4, they finished their 40 overs with 152. Withersfield won by 116 runs.

The next Withersfield match will be on Sunday 3rd July at 1.30pm, all are welcome so why not bring a picnic and enjoy a summer afternoon watching a traditional village activity at the Withersfield Cricket Ground.
